Sunshine Gym recently completed an outdoor fitness installation at Kirkleatham Hall School in Redcar, a specialist school supporting young people aged two to nineteen with a wide range of special educational needs.

The Mini Outdoor Fitness Rig and Activ8 system were installed to serve pupils over 1.4 meters in height. The Mini Outdoor Fitness Rig offers a compact yet versatile solution, featuring multiple stations that encourage balancing and strength-building activities. Its robust, weather-resistant construction supports group use, helping older pupils develop coordination, physical confidence, and teamwork while making effective use of the outdoor space.

Complementing this, the Activ8 system introduces users to low-impact cardiovascular and strength exercises through smooth mechanisms designed with safety and accessibility in mind. Its engaging design motivates pupils to participate in both structured lessons and free play, supporting fitness, endurance, and positive exercise habits for a range of abilities.

For younger children and those under 1.4 meters, the Children’s Energise unit was selected. This equipment focuses on playful movement, offering stepping, pushing, and rotating activities that encourage energetic, imaginative play. It promotes the development of gross motor skills and coordination in a fun and accessible way, helping to build confidence and physical ability from an early age.

To ensure the entire outdoor area is safe and welcoming, impact-absorbing grass mats were installed beneath and around the equipment. These mats allow natural grass to grow through while providing essential cushioning to reduce the risk of injury, maintaining safety and usability throughout the year.

Kirkleatham Hall School is dedicated to supporting young people with a wide range of additional needs, helping them develop independence, physical confidence, and wellbeing from early childhood through to young adulthood. This new outdoor fitness area reflects the school’s commitment to inclusive education by offering tailored, supportive environments where every pupil, regardless of age or ability, can explore movement, build strength, and enjoy active play in a safe, engaging setting.
