Diabetes is a chronic medical condition that impacts a person’s blood sugar levels, often them to be elevated.
Diabetes can be categorised into three different types, with types one and two being the most common among UK adults, and type 2 being the most prevalent of those. It is noted that out of all UK adult sufferers, 90% of these will have type two diabetes, and as we go on, it will become more evident as to why this is most shocking.
Due to the nature of this debilitating condition, there are multiple charities and foundations that are doing brilliant work researching potential cures or treatments for this disease.
The International Diabetes Federation is the main organisation, deemed an umbrella ‘charity’ it consists of 230 national diabetes associations worldwide.
In the UK the main diabetes charity is Diabetes UK. They help to lead the fight against diabetes across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
Each year they work tirelessly to set up campaigns and fundraisers to help those living with the condition.

Type One Diabetes

This type of diabetes is an autoimmune condition which develops in early childhood and is not a result of lifestyle or environment. This type of diabetes like type two can be hereditary.
This means that if someone in your family suffers from the condition, then you or your children will have an increased risk.
The main charity events held/supported by this assassination include Diabetes Awareness Week which runs in mid-June, as well as World Diabetes Day which is held annually on the 14th of November.

Type Two Diabetes

Type 2 diabetes, unlike the first type, is not a condition people are born with. This type of diabetes develops as a result of environmental factors, such as alcohol consumption or excess weight.
Type 2 diabetes is a growing problem all over the world! There are 4.7 Million UK residents who suffer from diabetes, and 95% of those sufferers are fighting Type 2 diabetes!
One of the key risk factors for developing Type 2 diabetes is excessive weight and poor diet. It is often developed by an individual as a result of being clinically obese. This means having a BMI of over 30, or a waist circumference which is greater than, 40 inches (men) and 35 inches (women).
Most people who are clinically obese are so due to over-indulgence, something which can be prevented, or stopped. Therefore, the fact that 95% of diabetics have type 2 is a concerning statistic. This means that 95% of cases could have been prevented with simple lifestyle changes.
But there is good news amongst all of this… this type of diabetes can be reversed.
Sometimes diabetes can be cured by lifestyle changes. However, this can be a lengthy, stressful process that can leave lasting damage.
Therefore it is recommended that those whose BMI is over 30 or their waistline exceeds the guidelines stated that they should make these changes now. Before they develop this life-changing condition!

Type Three Diabetes

Type 3 diabetes is often also referred to as “Gestational Diabetes” and is contracted as a result of insulin resistance during pregnancy. Any pregnant woman can develop gestational diabetes however your risk factor is increased if you are overweight, obese, or have a history of diabetes in the family.
This type of diabetes often subsides once you have given birth, however, some people do continue to suffer postpartum.
