As the school year heads into its final stretch, the summer term offers a brilliant opportunity to energise your PE programme with outdoor gym equipment that promotes real movement, fresh air, and student engagement.
With the sun on your side, now’s the time to take PE lessons outside, and we’ve got just the plan to help you do it.
Warm-up the right way with the Sky Stepper
Every great PE session starts with a warm-up, and the Sky Stepper adds fun and function right from the first minute. This low-impact cardio machine gets hearts pumping while being gentle on joints, making it ideal for all ages. Students can use it to increase circulation and activate their lower body before moving onto more dynamic movement. Plus, the unique stepping motion makes it feel more like a game than a workout, which means pupils actually want to use it.
Action step: Kick off each session with 3–5 minutes on the Sky Stepper. Rotate students in pairs and set a timer.
Rotate through the Slalom Skier
Next up, time to build agility, rhythm, and balance. The Slalom Skier is perfect for helping students develop lower-body coordination and lateral movement, the kind of skills that boost performance in every sport from football to athletics. The side-to-side motion is fun and fast-paced, encouraging students to control their movement while staying light on their feet.
Action step: Give each student 30 seconds to ski, rest, then repeat. Challenge them to increase their range of motion and stay consistent with their rhythm.
Build endurance with the Health Walker
For whole-body movement, the Health Walker is a great. This full-motion machine gets the arms and legs moving together, mimicking natural walking. It’s excellent for endurance training and works especially well with students who benefit from gentle, continuous movement.
Action step: Add the Health Walker to your cool-down routine, or use it for steady-state cardio, focusing on posture and breathing.
Improve balance and focus with Tai Chi Discs
Our Tai Chi Discs are perfect for improving balance, focus, and coordination. As students move through a series of slow, controlled motions, they engage their core and improve posture while benefiting from the calm, meditative aspects of Tai Chi. These discs help develop flexibility, mental concentration, and relaxation, making them ideal for moments of mindfulness within a PE lesson.
Action step: Introduce a Tai Chi sequence at the beginning or end of each session, allowing students to connect with their breath and focus on slow, fluid movements.
Add strength with the Rower
For a full-body workout, our children's Rower brings both strength and cardiovascular benefits. Students can use it to build endurance and upper-body power while learning proper technique. This piece of equipment targets multiple muscle groups, including the back, legs, arms, and core, making it a fantastic addition to any fitness circuit.
Action step: Incorporate 2-minute rowing intervals in a circuit or as a cool-down activity, focusing on proper form and control.
Design a weekly circuit
By using the outdoor gym equipment listed above, you can design a brilliant PE plan that fits right into a 30- or 60-minute lesson. Build a circuit with time-based intervals (30 seconds on, 15 seconds off), or use them as activity stations in a larger obstacle course.
The summer term advantage
Outdoor gym equipment brings variety into PE lessons and gets students excited about being active. With the summer term’s warm weather and blue skies, there’s never been a better time to refresh your PE plans and make the most of your school's outdoor space.
