What is The Daily Mile™?

The #DailyMile™ is an initiative which started in a Scottish primary school back in 2012.

This campaign was set up to encourage children to engage in more physical activity. With a current aim of just 15 minutes per day.

Children can decide to walk, run, or jog their Daily Mile™

It is a one size fits all activity, meaning anybody, of any age, and any ability can get involved.

The initiative was set up in order to boost the fitness levels in primary schools across the UK.

It takes just four weeks for you to see a significant improvement in a child’s fitness levels.

This means that if primary school children did this kind of exercise every day, they would reduce their chances of suffering from weight-related issues in the future.

The #DailyMile™ requires no specialist equipment! Therefore getting involved is completely free.

There are no excuses, as children are not required to change into their PE kits!

This non-competitive form of exercise not only comes with a significant amount of physical health benefits, but it is also known to:

  • Improve behaviour

  • Improve mood

  • Boost confidence

  • Improve concentration

Why is it so important to get children active?

Obesity rates in the UK are rising every day!

The government suggest that 70% of adults will be obese, or overweight by 2034. Obesity in adults causes diseases such as:

  • Type two diabetes

  • Asthma

  • Hypertension

  • Heart disease

  • Strokes

  • Some types of cancer

Children who are overweight or obese are more likely to remain at that unhealthy weight as they transition into adulthood.

Statistics have shown that 42% of obese adults were obese when they were at school.

That is where the #DailyMile™ comes in, by encouraging more children to be active whilst at school, they are more likely to stay active after they leave.

By stopping obesity during childhood, we can reduce the number of obese adults that we have in this country.
