Public Health England have taken steps in their effort to put a stop to nationwide obesity.
#Active10 is their well thought out and extremely easy to follow initiative which aims to get more people, more physically active.
Their general idea is to get adults and children walking at a brisk pace for just 10 minutes per day – Something which for many of us, is extremely achievable.
Not to stop there, health professionals have developed a FREE app which allows you to easily track your progress. Making getting fit, more accessible to EVERYONE.
Here at Sunshine Gym, we love the idea of getting more people moving!
We want to show our support for such a wonderful scheme by giving you just a little more information, on everything #Active10 is about.
What is Active 10?
Previously the NHS has recommended that adults should walk for 150 minutes per week. This is approximately 22 minutes per day, which is almost double what they are recommending now.
So why the change of heart?
Experts have suggested that when it comes to exercise, the intensity of the workout is much more important than the steps done or distance travelled.
This is because doing a more intense workout elevates your heart rate. When you elevate your heart rate it enables you to burn more calories in a shorter amount of time.
Public Health England believes that by setting more realistic health and fitness goals ensures people are more likely to stick to them.
By doing just 10 minutes of brisk walking each day, you can increase your fitness levels dramatically.

What is “Brisk Walking“?
A “Brisk Walk” determines a higher than normal walking pace.
Normal walking pace is around 3mph, and therefore a brisk walk should be anything above 4mph. But that isn’t to say that if your normal walking pace is a little slower that you can’t benefit from this 10 minute brisk walk.
So long as you up your normal pace – you can benefit. And with regular brisk walks you will hopefully improve your fitness levels and increase your speed.
Take a look below for some helpful tips, on how to improve your brisk walking technique:

The Active 10 App
The #Active10 app is an app that you can download onto your smartphone or tablet.
The app helps you track your daily activity, and works by using the data stored on your phone. This stored data will be used to determine the amount of physical activity you have done each day. It will also determine how fast you have been walking.
The app allows you to set your own fitness goals, with three different levels of intensity.
You can choose to set your fitness goals from just one #Active10 per day up to three #Active10s per day. You can choose this dependant on your fitness abilities and personal goals.
Creators of the app suggest that you keep the device in your pocket, or as close to your body as possible. Having the device in your bag does not show reliable results, as it cannot accurately determine the pace.
In order for the app to pick up on the completion of your daily #Active10, you have to be in motion for 10 consecutive minutes.
The app does allow you to slow down or stop for a maximum of two minutes before resetting. This allows you to stop at traffic lights and slow down for various other obstacles.
