Outdoor Gym Equipment Installed at Historic Playing Field | Little Haywood
Breathing New Life into Jubilee Playing Fields, Great Haywood
Set in the heart of the Staffordshire village of Little Haywood, Jubilee Playing Fields has long been a well-used open space for local residents, known for its friendly atmosphere and recreational value. The area has traditionally supported dog walking, informal sports and community meetups. However, the lack of dedicated fitness infrastructure had become a limiting factor for those wanting to incorporate structured exercise into their outdoor routines.
Recognising this gap, Sunshine Gym partnered with local stakeholders to deliver a purpose-built outdoor gym that promotes inclusive, accessible fitness. This parish council outdoor gym initiative aimed to activate the full potential of this historic Jubilee Sports Ground, giving residents a new reason to visit, engage and stay active.
Strategic Fitness Installation for a Growing Community
In 2024, an outdoor gym was installed directly on-site at Jubilee Fields, supporting a wider ambition to promote healthier lifestyles across Great Haywood and the surrounding areas. With a modest but efficient investment of £7,900, Sunshine Gym delivered a selection of tried-and-tested outdoor fitness equipment to elevate the park’s usability throughout the year.
The choice of location ensures that the gym equipment is fully integrated within the park’s existing green space—offering a convenient, cost-free alternative to indoor gyms and fitness centres. This development complements other ongoing improvements in the area, including landscaping and local building projects, positioning Jubilee Playing Fields as a central wellness asset for Stafford residents.
Equipment Installed: A Full-Body Fitness Experience Outdoors
The outdoor gym equipment at Jubilee Playing Fields was selected for its ability to accommodate a wide variety of users—from complete beginners to more experienced exercisers—while requiring no electricity or complicated maintenance.
Cardio & Movement-Based Machines
-
Sky Stepper: A popular choice for low-impact aerobic workouts, this piece simulates stair-climbing and helps users elevate their heart rate while being gentle on joints.
-
Double Health Walker: Ideal for rhythmic, walking-style movement that boosts cardiovascular health, especially for seniors or those returning to exercise.
-
Double Slalom Skier: Encourages lateral movement and coordination, engaging the core and lower body while offering a fun and intuitive workout.
Strength and Functional Training Units
-
Combi Pull Down Challenger & Power Push: Offers controlled resistance movements similar to those found in a traditional indoor gym, helping users develop upper body strength and functional endurance.
-
Double Pull Up Bar: Suitable for calisthenics and bodyweight strength training. This piece supports a wide range of upper-body movements, including pull-ups, leg raises, and static holds.
Inclusive Equipment for All Abilities
-
Tai Chi Discs (inclusive design): These encourage controlled, rotational arm movements, helping to improve coordination, joint mobility and relaxation. The inclusion of accessible pieces like the Tai Chi Discs ensures that the equipment caters to all age groups and mobility levels—reinforcing the community-focused purpose of this outdoor gym.
Encouraging Daily Fitness at Jubilee Sports Ground
Since the completion of the installation, there has been a marked increase in the number of people using Jubilee Playing Fields for exercise. The visible presence of the gym equipment has inspired a shift in how the space is used—beyond traditional recreation and into daily health routines.
Local residents, from teenagers to retirees, have embraced the gym as a free and convenient option to stay active, with many integrating it into their morning walks or evening visits. By providing this access point to exercise in a familiar, welcoming environment, the outdoor gym has broken down barriers associated with cost, transport and confidence that often prevent people from accessing indoor fitness centres.
A New Fitness Landmark for Great Haywood
The outdoor gym installation supports the wider vision of making Jubilee Fields Great Haywood a landmark of health, wellbeing and inclusivity within Staffordshire. With other nearby developments—including residential growth and small-scale construction efforts from local trades such as builders in Great Haywood—the area is rapidly evolving to better serve its growing population.
This project aligns with the broader strategic goal of increasing outdoor activity opportunities across Stafford. As interest continues to grow in low-cost, high-impact public fitness infrastructure, Sunshine Gym’s installation at Jubilee Playing Fields stands as a replicable model for future parish council outdoor gym projects across the county.
The outdoor gym installation initiative was driven by the need to promote healthier lifestyles. As such, a range of Sunshine Gym’s equipment was installed on the playing fields including a Sky Stepper, a Double Slalom Skier, a Double Health Walker, a Combi Pull Down Challenger & Power Push, inclusive Tai Chi Discs and a Double Pull Up Bar.
Since the installation of the outdoor gym, there has been a noticeable surge in the number of people exercising within the public recreation ground. People of all age groups, from teenagers to seniors, have been actively using the equipment to engage in workouts ranging from cardio exercises to strength training.
The accessibility of the outdoor gym has attracted people who might not have previously considered traditional indoor fitness centres due to costs or other barriers, contributing to an overall improvement in community health and well-being.
