Raising the profile of exercising outdoors is among the aims of Oxhey First School. And with a Sunshine Gym, all children are motivated to take part in physical activity in the open air. The school, part of the Children First Learning Partnership in Staffordshire, invested £6,600 from its PE and Sport Premium in outdoor gym equipment. Supplying a school based close to our head office and distribution warehouse was an honour for Sunshine Gym. We designed a gym that included a good mix of cardiovascular equipment. A Double Health Walker and Double Slalom Skier are always popular with young people. This kit is easy to operate and the user can set their own pace and speed. A Children’s Horse Rider mirrors the actions and movements typically associated with riding a horse, capturing the imagination of children and injecting fun into a workout. The gym in the playground at the school also includes a Sky Stepper, the outdoor gym equivalent to a cross trainer. The traditional gym theme continues with a Children’s Rower and Children’s Arm and Pedal Bike. Sunshine Gym installed the outdoor gym on the playground and now children use the equipment on a daily basis, with a ‘bubble’ rota in place to accommodate health and safety requirements. The school’s PE and Sport Premium report says: “We invested in a playground gym to encourage children to be active during their playtime, and to teach them the importance of a healthy body. “Children are now more active at lunch times and break times.”
