A community green space developed almost 25 years ago to provide leisure facilities for residents now features an outdoor gym with stunning views across Oldham.
Four pieces of outdoor gym equipment have been installed by Sunshine Gym at Sholver Millennium Green, close to Sholver Community Centre.
The outdoor space, run and maintained by volunteers, was created in 1998 as part of a government initiative to celebrate the turn of the Millennium.
Sholver Millennium Green Trust now fundraises for and runs the green for the benefit of the community.
Together with Sholver and Moorside Community Team, a residential group which runs the community centre, it contributed towards the outdoor gym provision. Grants were also made available from Positive Steps Oldham, which provides support services, and local councillors.
The outdoor gym area features the most popular pieces of equipment from the Sunshine Gym cardiovascular range.
A Double Slalom Skier offers two users the opportunity to work out together at the same time, while controlling their own speed and pace.
A Sky Stepper, similar to a cross trainer, has been made available to work the upper and lower body.
A Health Walker, which is our version of an outdoor treadmill, and a Bicycle complete the circuit.
With the benefits of community green space playing an increasingly important role in people’s lives, volunteers hope more residents and visitors will make use of the facilities in their neighbourhood.
The grants for the outdoor gym equipment come in addition to National Lottery funding, announced earlier this year, which is being invested in repairing footpaths and removing fly-tipped waste.
